KCOM ups the pace for Hull Marathon runners

2

Runners will face an extra feat of athleticism when they attempt the Hull Marathon.

As well as facing the 26 mile race, which will take place on Sunday, 24 September, participants will also be able to take on the KCOM Ultrafast 100 – a timed 100m sprint within mile 24 of the course.

The 24th mile of the route takes runners round the track at Costello Athletics Stadium and as they head down the back straight they will be timed over 100m.

Race Director Lucas Meagor, said despite being an extra ‘hurdle’ to overcome the sprint may encourage runners on their way to the finish line.

He said: “Runners can see how fast they can go during a part of the marathon usually associated with being one of the worst miles and it'll take their mind off the marathon – briefly!”

The KCOM Ultrafast 100 will be for marathon runners only but there is no obligation to sprint. Runners can continue at their chosen marathon pace if they wish and whatever their pace they will be supported and encouraged by Race Angels from Fitmums and Friends.

Prizes will be awarded to the fastest man and woman and, to make it a fair challenge for all marathon runners, the winning times will be calculated as a ratio between their time for 100m and their marathon finishing time.

Lucas added: “I am delighted to have the support of KCOM for this new competition within our event. I believe this to be a unique and different feature for the RB Hull Marathon and it will give runners an additional challenge.”

Brendon Smurthwaite, KCOM’s community coordinator, said: “We are delighted to be sponsoring the sprint section of The Hull Marathon and wish the best of luck to all the intrepid runners who will be taking part in this magnificent event for the city.

“We especially applaud anyone who still has the energy and determination to sprint 100m after running 23 miles and look forward to cheering them on as they strain every sinew to reach their personal bests.”

The KCOM Ultrafast 100 is one of several new features for the City of Culture edition of the RB Hull Marathon.
