National Tourism Week: Be a tourist in your own city

3

It’s National Tourism Week, so we’ve rounded up five ways to be a tourist at home.

Let Paul Schofield show you around

Even if you’re a native to the area, there’s always more to discover about Hull. Paul Schofield is a fully-qualified freelance guide who certainly shows you a thing or two about the city’s rich heritage.

His main tour takes you around the Old Town, where you can explore Hull’s charming historic quarter. Learn all about the secrets, legends and folklore and take a peek through England’s smallest window.

Dive into free museums and galleries

The Streetlife Museum of Transport is full to the brim with old buses, trains and trams that children can hop on and explore. Meanwhile, Hull and East Riding Museum takes you back in time to before the first settlers arrived in the area.

Wilberforce House, located in the building that the great MP was born in, highlights the life and work of William Wilberforce, as well as the brutality of the slave trade.

Ferens Art Gallery and Hull Maritime Museum are also great spots to head to if you’re in the city centre. The latter is jam-packed full of nautical artefacts, such as whale bones and scrimshaw art, whilst the gallery is home to a mix of contemporary and classical works.

Take plenty of snaps

One thing that tourists always have on them is a camera. Whether it’s your phone or a fancy DSLR, don’t hesitate to document the day and take lots of photos.

Some of the best places to get that perfect Instagram shot are the pastel-coloured Prince Street off Trinity Square, the serene Hull Marina and good old Humber Street.

Hop from phone box to phone box

As you’ll learn on Paul Schofield’s tour, Hull is the only city in the UK that has cream phone boxes. This has fast become a symbol of the city’s independence.

KCOM has recently designed a 90-minute tour that takes you around our iconic K6 phone kiosks and some of the popular sites of Hull City Centre. You can discover where King Henry VIII once enjoyed a spot of bowling and learn more about the grand Victorian buildings that flank city’s streets.

“We’re delighted to be launching our K6 trail that will give everyone a perfect excuse to explore all the great things Hull has to offer,” says Cathy Phillips, KCOM’s Chief Marketing Officer. "The trail leads through Hull Old Town to Paragon Station and the Marina via the city’s medieval walls, historic churches and proud maritime past. So, download a map and get ready to see Hull in a whole new light.”

Sample the local cuisine

When you visit a new place, it’d be rude not to sample some of its tasty delicacies. For Hull, this is the mouth-watering pattie and chips. You can get one to go at Bob Carver’s, or sit down and enjoy at the Lion and Key pub on the High Street. Don’t forget the chip spice!
