Three groups scoop latest KCOM Community Grants

With the public voting now closed, the three winners to receive a community grant of £1,000 each have been revealed as Northcott School, the Friends of St Anne's and the RSPCA Hull & East Riding branch.

Brendon Smurthwaite, KCOM’s community coordinator, said: “We are absolutely delighted to reveal the three worthy winners, as voted for by the people of Hull and East Yorkshire.

“We received a record number of votes for this latest round of grants with more than 2,300 people supporting their favourite cause.

“Each of the winning groups does a fantastic job improving the lives of people in their community and we are now looking forward to helping them continue their valuable work.

“For those group who didn’t quite make it this time, there will be another round of grants opening for nominations in the new year.”

Katherine Johnson, headteacher at Northcott School, said the grant would go toward helping youngsters with extra needs.

She said: “Northcott School are thrilled to have been awarded a grant from the KCOM community grants scheme.

“Our school community has communication and interaction needs and can experience sensory issues. This grant will allow us to transform a space to provide essential sensory equipment and outdoor learning opportunities.

“We are very grateful of the support of companies like KCOM who allow schools to provide additional resources and experiences for our pupils.”

Amanda Best, chair of Friends of St Anne's, said the grant would go towards buying new equipment for young people at the Welton school.

She said: “We are extremely grateful and overwhelmed for the support we received and wish to thank everyone who voted for us.

“This grant will enable us to provide much needed equipment and activities for the students at the school.”

The third winner, the Hull branch of RSPCA, will use its grant to build a community garden.

Branch general manager Alison Ripley said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to have been awarded a KCOM community grant of £1,000.

“This grant will enable us to continue developing our Inner City Community Garden space into a vibrant and inclusive learning resource for our visiting schools, groups and families.  We’re very much looking forward to partnering with KCOM as we transform our centre on Clough Road.”

The next round of KCOM community grants opens for nomination on 1 January, 2020, with the public vote starting on 10 February.
