An East Riding School for disabled youngsters will buy new equipment after scooping a KCOM Community Grant

St Anne’s School, a community special day school based in Welton, East Yorkshire, is one of three charities chosen by the public to receive one of KCOM’s £1,000 quarterly grants.

Amanda Best, chair of Friends of St Anne's, said: “We are extremely grateful and overwhelmed for the support we received and wish to thank everyone who voted for us.

“This grant will enable us to provide much needed equipment and activities for the students at the school.”

The school caters for two to 19-year-olds and provides a quality, inclusive education for pupils with severe learning difficulties and those with profound and multiple needs.

The Friends and Parents Committee is a small charity started in September 2011 by parents to raise funds to provide education, equipment, recreational and leisure time opportunities for the children.

The Friends of St Anne’s was one of three charities chosen by public vote to be awarded a grant with Northcott School, in north Hull, and the RSPCA Hull & East Riding branch also receiving £1,000.

Brendon Smurthwaite, KCOM’s community coordinator, said: “We’re absolutely delighted that the Friends of St Anne’s was one of the charities chosen by a public vote to receive a grant. They’re a fantastic charity that does incredible work to improve the lives of many youngsters.

“Our community grants scheme has been a big hit since we opened it up to public voting earlier this year. We received a record number of votes for this latest round of grants, with more than 2,300 people supporting their favourite cause.

“For those groups who didn’t quite make it this time, there will be another round of grants opening for nominations in the new year.”

The next round of KCOM community grants opens for nomination on 1 January, 2020, with the public vote starting on 10 February.
