What to watch on Now TV this January

Pacific Rim: Uprising

Fans of Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 hit Pacific Rim were torn on this film when it was released, but it’s definitely one you should see for yourself before passing judgement.

Pacific Rim: Uprising was released last March and directed by Steven S. DeKnight, with del Toro serving as a producer. The sequel stars newcomers such as John Boyega and Scott Eastwood, alongside actors from the original film, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Burn Gorman.

Set in the year 2035, ten years after the first film, the plot follows humanity as it is again forced to fight Kaiju, the giant monsters set on destroying the world.

A Quiet Place

Arguably one of the best horror films of the last decade, A Quiet Place was directed by John Krasinski, who wrote the screenplay with Bryan Woods and Scott Beck. The film stars Krasinski in the lead, alongside wife Emily Blunt and young talents Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe.

The plot revolves around a family facing struggles in a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by mysterious blind monsters with an acute sense of hearing. A Quiet Place draws inspiration from classic thrillers such as Alien, No Country for Old Men and In the Bedroom.

True Detective

The third season of True Detective, the American anthology crime drama television series created by Nic Pizzolatto, is scheduled to premiere on 13 January 2019.

The story takes place in the Ozarks over three separate time periods, as partner detectives investigate a macabre crime involving two missing children. This time, Mahershala Ali plays the lead role of detective Wayne Hays, while Stephen Dorff is his partner, detective Roland West.

Solo: A Star Wars Story

If this time of year just doesn’t feel right without a new Star Wars film, you can make up for it by streaming Solo: A Star Wars Story. Starring Alden Ehrenreich as everyone’s favourite space cowboy, Han Solo, the plot takes place approximately ten years prior to the events of A New Hope, and explores the early adventures of Han Solo and Chewbacca, who join a heist within the criminal underworld.

The supporting cast in this movie is amazing, with stars such as Donald Glover offering a new take on old character we all love. With an estimated production budget of at least $275 million, Solo is one of the most expensive films ever made.

Isle of Dogs

Director Wes Anderson’s most recent offering is Isle of Dogs, a quirky stop-motion film set in a dystopian near-future Japan. The story follows a young boy searching for his dog after the species is banished to an island following the outbreak of a canine flu.

The visuals are stunning and the ensemble voice cast is even better, including powerhouses such as Bryan Cranston, Jeff Goldblum and Tilda Swinton.
