What to watch on Now TV this month

2

A little look at some of the best new releases to hit Now TV this month.

Sharp Objects

If you’re a fan of artistically bleak, female-led drama The Handmaid’s Tale, then Sharp Objects should definitely be the show you binge next to help you deal with the fact Offred won’t be back on our screens until next year.

Based on the novel of the same name by Gone Girl author and lover of dark female heroines Gillian Flynn, Sharp Objects follows journalist Camille Preaker (played by the fantastic Amy Adams) as she returns to her small southern hometown to report on the murders of two teenage girls.

With a supporting cast of incredible actresses like Patricia Clarkson as Camille's mother and breakout young talent Eliza Scanlen as her unsettling younger half-sister, the series does a brilliant job of making you feel like you’re right in the middle of their family drama.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Quintessentially British spy legend Harry Hart is back in this sequel to 2015’s wild comedy Kingsman: The Secret Service, and that can’t even be counted as a spoiler considering they plastered Colin Firth all over the marketing for the film.

Following on from the events of the first movie, chav-turned-secret-agent Eggsy (played by the brilliant Taron Egerton) is now a fully-fledged member of Kingsman, taking ‘late’ mentor Harry’s mantle as Galahad. After an attack on their headquarters by new villain Poppy Adams, portrayed in a strangely endearing manner by Julianne Moore, Eggsy and Merlin (played by Mark Strong) follow an emergency doomsday protocol, which leads them to Statesman, their American counterpart agency.

Packed with plenty of action and some truly remarkable guest appearances from Elton John, if you were a fan of how over the top the first film was, you’ll love the sequel just as much.

Keeping up with the Kardashians

Love them or hate them, you can’t deny that the Kardashian (and Jenner) sisters make entertaining TV. Now in its 15th season, Keeping up with the Kardashians is set to air ten episodes running from August to October.

Though two of the sisters were pregnant during the filming of these episodes last year, it didn’t put a hamper on their feuds and dramas, as recently evidenced by Kourtney and Khloé’s Twitter accounts. Scott Disick also continues to feature regularly this season despite his breakup with Kourtney, bringing with him his issues over new girlfriend Sofia Richie and his own business ventures.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

The most recent addition to the new Star Wars trilogy seemed to divide fan opinions almost as much as the controversial 2000s prequels. Despite this, it still managed to become the highest-grossing film of 2017 and the second-highest-grossing film of the entire Star Wars franchise.

Set immediately after 2015’s The Force Awakens, the story mainly follows sparky heroine Rey (Daisy Ridley) as she pushes Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) to teach her the ways of the Jedi. This, she hopes, will help the Resistance win the fight against big bad Darth Vader wannabe Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and the dark-sided First Order.

The Last Jedi features the first posthumous film performance by the world’s favourite space princess Carrie Fisher, and was dedicated to her memory.
