KCOM introduces price cap on phone package for low income families

KCOM has announced changes to its Social Access Package (SAP) to help customers using this service stay in control of how much they pay for phone calls.

From 1 June, 2017, KCOM is introducing a price cap of £10 for customers on its SAP for any calls made outside of their allowance.

The package is designed to provide low cost telephone services for low income households.

This means that they will only ever pay a maximum of £10 a month for calls, subject to KCOM’s Fair Usage Policy.

Customers using the package will now pay a monthly charge that covers line rental, 20 local calls and 60 minutes of calls to numbers beginning 084 or 087 each month.

084 and 087 numbers are usually “service numbers” used to call banks, travel services, government departments, to vote in competitions or ring directory enquiries.

The price of the SAP monthly rental has also been reduced from £5.12 to £5.10.

Additional calls are charged for on a pence per minute basis, as with the previous package, but the changes KCOM is making mean that once a customer has reached a total spend of £10 within the month, any further calls they make will be at no extra cost.

This will apply to all calls, including international and premium rate calls.

Other initiatives introduced by the communications company today include the removal of early termination fees, meaning customers can cancel their SAP at any time without penalty, and the introduction of monthly billing, with smaller, more frequent bills helping customers to manage their finances more easily.

Current SAP customers will also receive a retrospective credit for charges over £10 during any monthly period from 1 March 2017.

Cathy Phillips, KCOM’s Chief Marketing officer, said: “We are committed to doing everything we can to help our customers keep in touch with their friends and family and to provide a range of packages to suit different needs.”

“These changes to our Social Access Package are designed to help people who want to have the convenience and benefit of a home phone without the worry of unexpected bills.”
